“History in a Peat Bog” exhbit opening
April 10 @ 4:30 pm – 6:00 pm

The Becker County Historical Society and Museum is excited to announce the unveiling of a unique new exhibit on April 10th from 4:30pm-6:00pm showcasing an extraordinary, local, archaeological discovery. The exhibit features bison bones with remarkable preservation, including some intact cartilage, unearthed from a peat bog in the Frazee area. This rare find, centuries old, offers an unprecedented glimpse into the past and is complemented by the stunning artistic interpretations of artist Hans Gilsdorf.
The discovery of the bison remains in the bog—complete with some intact cartilage—is nothing short of remarkable. In most instances the preservation of cartilage, a soft tissue, is extremely rare. However, peat bogs are known for preserving organic materials. These bones and cartilage were preserved for centuries in the cool, oxygen-deprived conditions of the bog, offering a unique opportunity to study the anatomy and biology of these incredible animals. The exhibit takes visitors on a journey through the layers of history, bringing the past to life through both science and art.
Artistic Interpretation by Hans Gilsdorf
Adding a compelling artistic dimension to the scientific discovery, the exhibit also features the works of acclaimed artist Hans Gilsdorf, who drew inspiration from the bison bones and the environment of the peat bog. Blending art and science with history, he has created a visual narrative that bridges the gap of time, allowing visitors to connect emotionally with the past while deepening their understanding of the scientific significance of the find.
