Nearly 90% of flowering plants rely on about 200,000 species of animal pollinators for fertilization. We will explore the native species plantings that are being planted around the museum and the role pollinators will play. We will examine the Smithsonian poster exhibit by the same name on display, do activities and crafts teaching us about different pollinators—from butterflies and hummingbirds to bats and the wind—and their favorite flowers based on floral characteristics like flower shape, color, scent, and more. We will even taste a bit of those sweet flowers ourselves and make dandelion jelly.
